Art Critique:
There needs to be more contrast, the background is too bright so the ships lose some definition. You need to pick a focal point for the piece, depth of field wise. The positioning of the two ships relative to the exploding ship don't provide a good sense of scale and perspective as their fighting each other for control of both.
While you did blur the ships a bit it looks more like you're trying to simulate motion than depth of field, neither of which is working very well. There is too much lighting on the ships from the foreground. The main light source needs to be coming from the explosion and illuminating the ships from behind. A much darker background would provide more contrast to the explosion and allow the eye to focus on it better.
The image is too bilaterally symmetric with the explosion basically right in the middle of the frame, which really kills any sort of motion and dynamicism in the piece. I'll see if I cant chop it up in photoshop a bit and try and edit it a bit to show you how I might improve it, while still keeping all the elements.

On the flip side, nobody but artists will be able to appreciate the corrections that I've made or be able to understand why they were suggested in the first place. All the laymen out there will always focus on the wrong things, being easily dazzled with lens flares and filter effects.
Ok friend; don't take it personally - that's a very arrogant retort right there. Beauty (and indeed aesthetics) is in the eye of the beholder; I liked your rework, but it didn't fit on my Desktop the way I appreciate it. But by all-means, if you can show me some lens-flare that looks good with icons over it ... be my guest. *shrug*
That bit wasn't aimed at you, but other less constructive posters.

I agreead with your criticism of the original piece, but your redo i thought was badly composited as well. however that pales into insignificance next to your ludicrous assertion that only artists can appreciate art. What a ****.
attitudes like that are why I stopped doing literary criticism, in the end it's just a big circlejerk.
if people likes it, they likes it. good enough.
That's not what I said. What I meant was, regardless of whether someone likes it or not (I still like the original piece, despite it's technical flaws) that someone not trained in the construction of images won't even know something is wrong or perceive it as incorrect, and thus won't appreciate the difference between a better composed piece.
As an example- the 'compositing': of course my compositing was terrible. It was 30 seconds per part. The whole point of the exercise was to show composition, not compositing skills. To wit: people are focusing on the wrong things. They're judging what they can perceive as flawed and only that, and won't find anything wrong with things that are flawed, but they don't perceive it as such.
